The National Private Pilots Licence

The National Private Pilot's Licence is a newly introduced qualification, which in a number of ways is similar to the old UK Private Pilot's Licence. The amount of training to qualify for the licence is less, and significantly the medical standards required are less stringent than for the JAA PPL, and can be conducted by your own GP.

The age requirements are similar to PPL i.e. you must be at least 16 years old to fly solo and 17 years old to apply for the licence.

Once the Licence is obtained it does have certain restrictions, but for the majority of pilots they will not be unduly constrained. The Licence may only be used in the UK, and not European Airspace, and there are limits to the weight, speed and complexity of aircraft which may be flown. Flights may only occur by day, and in reasonable weather conditions.

The actual training requirements for NPPL are less than the PPL and are as follows:

- 32 hours total as pilot of an aeroplane.

- 22 hours dual instruction to include 1 hour instrument appreciation

- 10 hours solo flight time (to include 4 hours solo cross-country flight time and one cross-country flight in the course of which full stop landings at two aerodromes other than the aerodrome of departure).

- Navigation Skill Test (NST) (minimum of 1 hour duration and to be taken prior to undertaking the qualifying solo cross-country flight detailed above).

- General Skill Test (GST) minimum of 1 hour duration. To be taken when all other aspects of training and examination have been satisfied.

- Ground examinations are required in the same subjects as for the JAA Licence, and must be taken within a period of 18 months during the training.
